Abstract
Drama is evolving from time to time. Drama appeared in the twentieth century with the aim of eradicating superstitions. Contemporary plays are written with underlining political woes. In the medieval period, dramas appeared to bring out the social woes and it creates awareness among the people, and the art of drama moved towards the path of development. Through drama the social condition of a particular period can be easily understood. In this way, the dramas that appear in Udaiyar's novel are not just dramas, but they have developed in a very broad manner, including many arts such as dance, drama and so on. The Cholas supported the art of dance and helped to develop the potential of an individual. Rajarajeswarar staged about the youth life of Udaiyar as Drama. The Cholas performed Ramayana stories in stage as dramas. Dramas like Keesagavatam Mareesavatam were made for children. It is clear that the Cholas patronized literature and devotional dances. Panchavanmadevi, wife of the Udaiyar, by dancing enacted the friendship between Sundar and the Lord in the stage. Seeing that, the audience was astonished to know about the special nature of the Lord. The Cholas set real events in dramas. Thus, it is possible to know about the customs and special activities of the people of the Chola period after watching the drama. With the help of plays one can convey the qualities of an individual to the world.
