Abstract
Whether there is deity remains to be investigated but a sense of awe was seen among the people of the Sangam period for the sake of belief in deity. Like good-evil, day-night, sun-moon, people believed that if there is a deity, there is also a demon. They said ghosts are the spirits of the dead. They believed that the deity would protect the people and the ghost would bring tribulation to the people. Not only that, people were afraid that if we did something wrong, the gods would do evil to them. Deities like Murugan and Thirumal are mentioned as the deities who protect the people and Sur, Anangu and Suli are mentioned as the deities who can threaten the people. They had great faith in God. From ancient times till now, religious belief has become an inseparable part of people's lives. Rituals and worship arose for the sake of faith.
