Abstract

There is no system of classification of vegetarianism and non-vegetarianism in food systems in Palanthami. Palandamizhars have been consuming foods that are available from the land and the environment. In this diet there is a mixture of plant foods and animal foods. Fish has been the staple food of the people of Neythal and a favorite food of the natives. Fish are caught in sea, canal, river and field. The weaving of shark hunting was meant to herald the prowess of the land man. References to the method of cooking fish as food and the use of fish oil for lighting lamps are widely found in Sangha literature.
