Abstract

Among the numerous literary genres in Tamil, novel literature is unique. Initially, there were historical fiction novels. Later, in course of time, a large number of regional novels depicting the pain and agony of the people of the land began to appear. In this way, the novel Geethari depicts the life of the shepherds who herd cattle. In this novel there are women characters like Irulayi, Muthammal, Karicha, Sivapi and Chithiram. Many of the problems faced by women in this novel are discussed in this novel. Thus, the purpose of this article is to explore how this novel expresses the issues related to women through the topics of attaining puberty, adoption of girl children, infertility and female infanticide.
