Abstract
Patriarchal social formation is the result of the surplus product after individual labor evolved from collective labor. Cultural institutions such as family and marriage were formed as a result of property ownership. A woman's adaptation in the family system depends on the man. A man is dominant. The woman is the source of such a family system. She can earn her family's reputation. Women like Revathi, Amaravathi, Kokila, Arunmozhi are the source of family organization in the novel Sellatha Panam. Revathi is the one who goes astray. Worried about her, Amaravathi and Arunmozhi deny her actions and try to keep the family away from trouble. But Revathi doesn't agree with their views and takes her own decision and marries Ravi. This makes her life miserable and restless. Later she gets injured in a fire accident and is treated in a hospital. In the end she dies because the treatment does not work. The novel shows that the woman who is the breadwinner of the family will take arbitrary decisions which will be detrimental.
