Abstract

Lullaby songs are the part of village people. It has a beautiful music. The child is mesmerized by the tone of the music and falls asleep. A mother sings lullabies by waggling her tongue to muffle the crying sound of her child. Lullaby songs are not sung in the same tone. It is sung in different pitches. Lullabies are mostly sung in the delightful tone called Neelambari. There are many Tamil words for lullabies. They are Thalattu, Rarattu, Thalaelo, Tharatu, Orattu, Olattu, Rorattu, Thottilpattu and Thiruthalatu. Folklore clearly depicts the civilization, culture, customs and current affairs of the country in an authentic manner. Lullabies plays an important role in folklore. The aim of this article is to show lullabies in a multifaceted prespective.
