Abstract

Among the contemporary writers, Thilagavathy’s literary works emphasises on the development and improvement of the people who belong to the low income sector. In particular, the plight of the construction workers is still worse. The novel, Kalmaram draw on the upliftment of the construction industry as a conceptual tool. The novel enkindles the concept through the women characters who protest and raise voice against the highclass society. This novel discloses the suffering, misery, burden, oppression and misfortune of the construction workers through its fictional characters. This study exposed the deplorable condition of workers in the construction industry in the novel. This research paper provides insight into the plight of the construction workers in general and the actions to be taken by the authorities in with specific considering the outrageous state of common workers.
