Abstract

There are those who attained godliness through penance. Doing something for petty pleasures is not considered as penance and it is useless. Thiruvalluvar, Thirumoolar, eighteen Siddhas, Vallalar etc have explained about penance. It is realised that through penance we can destroy the evil, make good people live, achieve the good and can overcome the death. If you do penance, the way to heaven will be opened. Hymns in Tamil  literature speak of the merits of penance. This article explains about penance and how Thiruvalluvar, Auvaiyar, Purumaadhi penance, Sambavi Mudra and Kesari Mudra explains about penance.
