Abstract
The story is one of the four types of folklore. Mythology is also a story. Even basically speaking is referred to as speaking in Sri Lanka. The story usually starts with one or two people talking and it has evolved into great epics and mythology. Because the central view of folklorists is that all works such as puranas, epics and Sangam literatures must have basically emerged as a short story and evolved out of oral practice. Here we can see that the need for customs such as stories and puranas constitutes a cultural identity. This article explains how performing puranas plays an important role in the cultural identity formation of Madurai and thereby the cultural identity of the city is created.
