Abstract
In Sangam literature, Marudathinai consists of 223 verses. Kuruntogai, Narrinai and Akananuru are the sums of solo songs, which contain 48, 32 and 40 songs respectively. 'Marutham' is a name that refers to a particular tree. It grows mostly on riverbanks and provides dense water shade to river ports. Later, the word 'Marutham' came to refer to Kalani, which had ploughed paddy fields with fertile paddy fields on the banks of a river. Moreover, the word 'Marutham' refers to the life style of the people of Marudham, their life style, and the hymns about it.
