Abstract

The arts are as old as the appearance of a man. Arts are seen as intertwined with the lives of ancient people. The hunter might have celebrated the success of the hunt by dancing that night to express his joy. After that, the person who engages himself in agriculture and animal husbandry has to face various troubles from nature to the intervention of living beings. In order to free himself from those troubles, he started worshiping thunder, lightning, trees, crows, etc. as deities. As an extension of this worship various folk arts developed. In this way, in the northern part of Kerala, 'Theyyam' is a kind of deity dance performed in the northern part of Kerala by painting various Characters and worshiping the deity. If we examine the original form of Theyyam, the article examines that its origin is the Sangam period.
