In this article, the novel Arumugam by Imayam is seen through the parameters of literal anthropology. The primary objective of this article is that if we approach the novels and short stories which depict about the downtrodden through anthropological perspectives, it is possible that these communities can improve considerably in every respect. In order to establish this hypothesis this article is being built on the assumption that literature in general is concerned about the human societies. Through this article it is proved with evidence that if we can approach novel literature on the perspectives of the discipline literal anthropology, it is possible to understand more scientifically and clearly various ethnic groups and establish their ethnic specific behavior. Further, this article could infer that the main cause for the sufferings of the downtrodden communities is their economic backwardness. Apart from this, the article could identify and explain vividly that the down trodden communities though they have attained sophistication in culture and habits, still their status is below the general standard and the other communities are treating them and approaching them with a different yard stick.
